Yeah that’s right. The fandom gods have answered my prayers & let me write a Batgirl novel for DC Comics!!!!
BATGIRL: POSSESSION — a full-length YA thriller novel —coming November 5th to a bookstore near you.
Come for the sinister supernatural Gotham Academy murder mystery, stay for the story about a young girl learning to trust her intuition, even when everyone else keeps telling her that she’s not important enough to be the hero of her own story.
Is this real?
Miraculously, yes lol. I’ve been sitting on this secret for forever and I’m psyched to finally get to talk about it.
How did this even happen?
Well. Sometimes… if you write a Batman joke into your first book, then a Robin joke in your second book, then continue writing about characters with an affinity for vigilantism, then invest in a creepy Batman artwork to hang above your writing desk, then rewatch 2003 Teen Titans and 1992 Batman The Animated Series nonstop for literally decades, then become that nerd at the party who always finds a way to bring up in conversation the narrative intrigue of the bat-family’s lack of powers, then start loudly complaining to your friends about how badly you want to write in the DC universe…
…the cosmos will present you with the opportunity to write a Batgirl novel just to shut you up.
(^^ the power of manifesting, etc, etc)
I received the call offering this gig out of the blue, literally in the middle of watching Young Justice and texting my bestie Latrel about how much I wanna write in the DC universe, sooo in terms of how this all came together, I’m chalking it up to some spooky woo-woo shit.
The world works in mysterious ways.
What’s the vibe of the book?
You can read the publishers’ description here, but essentially--
BATGIRL: POSSESSION comes out November 5th AKA prime spooky szn* and for good reason bc this book gets weird.
There is one paragraph in particular during the climax that is quite possibly the scariest most twisted freaky disturbing thing i’ve ever written (welcome to gotham, bb ✌🏾!!)
But like all my books, there’s also a lot of heart and humor in here too. Plus a healthy amount of ~drama~ between Batgirl and Robin (dick Grayson of course <3) because these two are just friends & definitely NOT DATING even though everyone thinks they are… & Robin is down bad but sparks a major argument between them… & while they’re beefing, the prime suspect’s brother really needs Batgirl’s help and turns out to be pretty sweet once you get to know him soooo… ya. there 👏🏾will 👏🏾 be 👏🏾 angst 👏🏾
But mostly a whole lot of Batgirl KICKING BUTT & TAKING NAMES 😤
I am beyond excited to contribute to the story of an iconic character like Barbara Gordon with such a fascinating cultural history. I love her & I hope you will too.
*It’s also kind of hilarious that it’s coming out on Election Day because… well… you’ll just have to read to find out what I mean by that lmao. But it is… relevant hahahaha
Are fans going to be pissed that Batgirl is Black?
Probably lol. Please pray for me, y’all.
Where can I learn more?
Pre-order links are up & ready to go on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and all the usual suspects
Hey, don’t you have another book coming out this year?
THAT’S RIGHT! I DO!
OUR SHOUTS ECHO comes out August 27, which is LESS THAN A MONTH away!
If you’re feeling any of that sweet, sweet existential dread right about now watching the presidential election and all the other chaos in the world, this is the book for you. Trust me.
CURRENT MEDIA DIET
Reading: Per Clare Osongco’s recommendation, I finished HOW TO END A LOVE STORY over the weekend. and truly loved it so much. It’s spicy though, so be warned!
Watching: As many of you might know, Star Trek is one of my favorite shows of all time. I love it so much that it’s honestly sometimes difficult to engage with the new generation of Trek shows because I’m so goddamn nostalgic, but I finally got over my annoying OG fan loyalty and started Star Trek Lower Decks and it is phenomenal. The best new age Trek show, hands down. I’m having the time of my life.
Listening: About twice a year, I go through a phase where I listen to a ton of Pavement. It hits me like a truck and then for at least two weeks, I cannot get enough of my suburban ennui rock. So, yeah, it’s that season for me, so I’m listening to Pavement. Sooooo much Pavement.
This was essentially what I looked like plotting the supernatural murder mystery in Batgirl: Possession btw. If you ever see me in person, ask me about how little time I had to churn out this book on deadline lmao
